Parent-Driven Education: Why Every Colorado School Should Strive to Be a Great Option

As the back-to-school season begins across Colorado, families are once again making decisions that will shape the future of their children. For many parents in Colorado State Senate District 13, these decisions go beyond school supplies; they involve choosing the right educational environment. Whether you live in Brighton, Greeley, or elsewhere in Weld County, elsewhere in Weld County, or across our state, one thing is clear: parents deserve real choices.

Every child deserves access to an excellent education, and every parent should have the leading voice in shaping that journey

The Power of Parental Choice

Parents know their children best, their learning styles, their strengths, their challenges. Education shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all mandate from Denver bureaucrats. That’s why I firmly support education freedom, where parents lead the way in making choices that are right for their families.

This is not just about charter schools or private options. It’s about making every public school a competitive, high-performing choice. When all schools are striving for excellence, driven by accountability, transparency, and high expectations, families win, and so do students.

What We’re Doing in Senate District 13

As your representative in the Colorado Senate, I’ve made it a priority to empower families through policy that supports:

  • Education Savings Accounts (ESAs): Giving families more flexibility to apply funds toward tuition, tutoring, or specialized services.
  • School choice tax credits: Encouraging investment in education while allowing families to make the most of their hard-earned dollars.
  • Funding that follows the student: Money should go to kids, not just institutions. When parents have control, schools work harder to earn their trust.

These are not radical ideas, they’re common-sense reforms that put students first. And they’re gaining momentum in Colorado because families are demanding more.

Why Summer Is the Perfect Time for Families to Engage

August isn’t just about new backpacks; it’s about rethinking how we define educational success. Unfortunately, summer learning loss can deepen achievement gaps and widen the divide between those who have access to quality learning and those who don’t. This is where parental engagement and expanded school options can make a lasting difference.

This summer, I encourage all families to:

  • Visit your local schools, public, charter, and private, and ask the hard questions.
  • Attend school board meetings. Be the voice your child needs.
  • Explore new programs such as trade pathways, vocational courses, or STEM-focused alternatives.
  • Connect with other parents. A strong network can create momentum for change.

The more informed and involved parents are, the more responsive our education system becomes.

Upholding Conservative Education Values

Conservative education values center around freedom, responsibility, and high expectations. I oppose efforts to inject divisive political agendas into the classroom. Instead, I support a curriculum rooted in reading, writing, math, civics, and critical thinking, the essentials our students need to succeed and contribute to society.

We must also respect parental rights. Transparency in curriculum, financial accountability, and protection against coercive ideologies are critical to restoring trust in our education system.
