Time for Regulatory Reform in Colorado: Reducing the Burden on Businesses and Families

Hello, fellow Coloradans!

Colorado’s regulatory environment is out of control, with more than 165,000 regulations in place—one of the highest numbers in the nation. While regulations are necessary to ensure a basic level of public safety, over-regulation comes with serious consequences. It drives up the cost of living, burdens property owners, and stifles business activity. It’s time for meaningful reform to restore balance and make Colorado a more affordable and business-friendly state.

The Problem with Over-Regulation

As highlighted in a recent report, the excessive number of regulations in Colorado has led to a decline in our state’s business rankings. Businesses, particularly small ones, struggle to navigate the red tape labyrinth, resulting in higher operating costs and reduced competitiveness. This environment discourages entrepreneurship and makes it harder for businesses to grow and create jobs.

But businesses are not the only ones affected—families and property owners are also feeling the squeeze. Over-regulation drives up costs across the board, from housing and utilities to everyday goods and services. For many Coloradans, the rising cost of living is making it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.

The Need for Common-Sense Reform

Regulations should be designed to protect public safety and ensure fairness—not to create unnecessary hurdles. It’s time for Colorado to take a closer look at our regulatory framework and make meaningful changes. Here’s what I propose as your representative in the Colorado Senate:

  1. Streamlining Existing Regulations: Conduct a comprehensive review of Colorado’s 165,000 regulations to identify and eliminate those that are outdated, redundant, or unnecessarily burdensome.
  2. Reducing the Cost of Compliance: Simplify the regulatory process to make it easier and more affordable for businesses to comply with necessary rules. This will create a more welcoming environment for entrepreneurs and job creators.
  3. Encouraging Business Growth: Introduce legislation that incentivizes innovation and investment while maintaining essential protections for workers and consumers.
  4. Making Housing More Affordable: Reform zoning and building regulations to reduce the cost of property ownership and increase the availability of affordable housing.
  5. Promoting Transparency and Accountability: Ensure that new regulations undergo a rigorous cost-benefit analysis before implementation, so we fully understand their impact on businesses and families.

Building a Stronger Colorado

Colorado should be a place where businesses thrive, families flourish, and opportunities abound. By reducing our unnecessarily high regulatory environment, we can lower the cost of living, encourage economic growth, and make our state more competitive.

As your representative in the Colorado Senate, I am committed to fighting for legislation that supports business growth, reduces costs, and makes life easier for all Coloradans. Together, we can reform our state’s regulatory environment and build a stronger, more prosperous Colorado.
