Hello, fellow Coloradans!
While statewide figures are not yet available, overdose deaths in 2023 continued to surge in the City and County of Denver. According to a recent report, 597 people died from drug overdoses in Denver in 2023, with nearly 400 of these deaths attributed to fentanyl. It’s heartbreaking. Nationally, such deaths declined last year. Colorado’s lax, far-left drug policies are failing us. As your candidate for the Colorado State Senate, I am committed to taking decisive action to address this crisis and protect our communities.

The Failure of Decriminalization
In 2019, Colorado’s far-left Legislature decided to defelonize the possession of fentanyl. This move was ostensibly intended to reduce the burden on the criminal justice system and focus on treatment rather than punishment. However, the results have been catastrophic. Instead of reducing harm, this policy has led to a dramatic increase in fentanyl-related deaths. The numbers speak for themselves: since defelonization, overdose deaths in Colorado have soared, with fentanyl being the primary culprit.
This rise in fatalities is a clear indication that we need to revisit Colorado’s far-left policies on crime and drugs. The current approach has failed to protect our citizens and has only exacerbated the crisis. It’s time for a change.
Re-felonizing Fentanyl Possession
As your state senator, I will work relentlessly to re-felonize fentanyl possession. This is not about being punitive; it’s about saving lives. Fentanyl is an extremely potent and dangerous drug, and treating its possession with the seriousness it deserves is crucial in our fight against this epidemic.
Re-felonizing fentanyl possession will:
- Deter Distribution: By imposing stricter penalties, we can deter those who distribute this deadly poison. Drug dealers need to know that there are severe consequences for spreading poison in our communities.
- Reduce Overdoses: Tougher laws will help to curb the availability of fentanyl on our streets, reducing the number of overdoses and saving lives.
- Promote Treatment: While we need stricter laws, we also need to ensure that those struggling with addiction have access to effective treatment programs. A balanced approach that includes both enforcement and rehabilitation is essential.
Comprehensive Approach to Combating the Crisis
Re-felonizing fentanyl possession is just one part of the solution. We must adopt a comprehensive approach that includes:
- Enhancing Law Enforcement: Provide our law enforcement agencies with the resources and training they need to effectively combat drug trafficking and distribution.
- Improving Treatment and Recovery Services: Increase funding for treatment programs and ensure that those in need have access to the help they require to overcome addiction.
- Raising Awareness: Launch educational campaigns to inform the public about the dangers of fentanyl and other opioids, and promote preventative measures.
- Supporting Community Initiatives: Partner with local organizations and community leaders to develop grassroots initiatives that address the root causes of addiction and provide support for those affected.
A Call to Action
The rising number of overdose deaths in Colorado is a tragedy that we cannot ignore. We owe it to our communities and our loved ones to take decisive action. Re-felonizing fentanyl possession is a crucial step in this process, and I am committed to making it a priority in the Colorado State Senate.
